Principal's Message

I'm excited to share my very first Principal's message for the College Newsletter. Taking on the role of Acting Principal over the past three weeks has been an incredible experience. I truly hope that Mrs. Antonucci had a well-deserved and refreshing long service leave, and that her time in South Africa was both relaxing and enriching.

As we move through Term 1, I reflect on just how busy and vibrant it has been for our students and staff. This term has been a wonderful blend of learning and fun, with many highlights. We have kicked off Interschool Sports, held our College photos, enjoyed both incursions and excursions, and most recently, came together for a lovely Ash Wednesday Liturgy. It has been a fulfilling start to the year, and I am so proud of all that we have achieved together.

I am also delighted to announce the College Captains, Sports Captains, and Student Representative Council members for 2025. We look forward to working with each of you and are excited to see you embark on your leadership journey. Please join me in warmly congratulating them on this achievement:

2025 COLLEGE CAPTAINS:

  • Darcy Alderson & Taitt Green: College Captains
  • Riccardo Baldock: College Vice Captain
  • Stella Fletcher & Art Taylor:  Primary Captains

2025 HOUSE CAPTAINS

Secondary Student Representative Council (SRC):

  • Year 7.1: Mason Window & Ella MacFarlane
  • Year 7.2: Kooper Sauer & Nadya Lachaiya
  • Year 8: Thomas Gadd, Tanika Otto & Taya Clancy
  • Year 9.1: Hrithik Lachaiya & Gemma Green
  • Year 9.2: Elliott Green & Bailey MacMillan
  • Year 10: Donna Coolwell & Swaran Lachaiya
  • Year 11: Christine Cragan & Kahl Wienands
  • Year 12: Lucy Healey-Bond & Taitt Green

Primary Student Representative Council (SRC):

  • Year 3/4C: Charli Hohn & Arianna Brand
  • Year 3/4W: Adelaide Richards & Aquila Dannatt
  • 5/6M: Hudson Nichols & Charlotte Scott
  • 5/6W: George McMillan & Tatum Sheridan

Looking ahead, we have our Three-Way Interviews coming up, which I highly encourage all families to participate in. These interviews provide a valuable opportunity for you, your child, and their classroom or subject teacher to discuss their progress and development. It is a time for open communication and collaboration, and I believe these conversations will set the tone for continued success. The PTO booking system will be available soon for you to book your interview times. Please note that the interviews will be held over two afternoons.

A heartfelt thank you to all our students and families for their continued engagement and support. It has been an absolute pleasure meeting many of you and working alongside such a dedicated community. I look forward to our ongoing partnership as we strive for success together.

In the broader context of our Catholic faith, we find ourselves in the season of Lent. This is a time of reflection, renewal, and growth. Our students have been learning about the significance of this time and how it offers us the opportunity to reflect on our actions and make positive changes in our lives. I encourage all members of our community to embrace this season as a time for personal and spiritual growth.

Thank you for your ongoing support

Peace and best wishes,

Tegan Hobbs

Acting Principal

Year 2's Fable Fiesta!

This term in Year 2 we are learning about Aesop’s Fables in our literacy lessons. The students are enjoying reading and listening to the stories and the valuable lessons they share, along with exploring the vocabulary, sentence structures and retelling the stories.

This week we looked at the story “The Tortoise and the Hare.” The students were tasked with retelling the story through a dramatic performance or by drawing pictures and sharing the story. The class had a lot of fun and were very encouraging to each other. Well done Year 2, your mini performances were great to watch.

Pancake Paradise at St Joey's: Celebrating Shrove Tuesday!

Tuesday, the 4th of March was a sweeter day at our school as we embraced the delightful tradition of Shrove Tuesday, also known as Pancake Tuesday! As we prepare ourselves for Lent, this special day of feasting provides a wonderful opportunity to gather in fellowship and gratitude.

Thank you to Ms. W, who led the pancake-making session alongside our wonderful volunteers! Courtesy of their hard work and dedication, we were treated to a delicious stack of free pancakes, with toppings including maple syrup, lemon juice and cinnamon sugar.

Year 12 Bake Sale for the Year 12 formal

The Year 12 class recently had a bake sale on Friday, the 28th of February 2025, to raise money for the Year 12 formal. Thanks to the commendable effort of the senior students and the St Joey's community, over $235 was raised for this worthy cause.

A special thank you goes out to everyone who donated baked goods, from cookies and cupcakes to delicious brownies and mini cheesecakes. This includes 'Katherine Fresh Fruit & Vegg Market' and  Jo Hersey. Your generosity made this fundraiser a success! Heartfelt thanks goes also to our dedicated staff who assisted the senior students with planning, running and promoting this event.

The money raised is going directly to the Year 12 formal, set to happen on Friday, the 2nd of May inside the school hall.

Bombing Of Darwin Commemoration Excursion

A small group of students traveled with Mr Green and Ms Ashby to Darwin to attend the Bombing of Darwin Commemoration service which was held on 19 February.

During the overnight excursion students visited the Darwin Aviation Museum, Darwin Military Museum, Royal Flying Doctor Bombing of Darwin Experience and Adelaide River War Cemetery.

School Captain Taitt Green, along with fellow senior student Rhys Atkinson laid a wreath on behalf of St Joseph's Catholic College.

A big Thank you to Holy Family Catholic Primary School for offering us a comfortable space to stay. Also to Darwin Seventh-day Adventist Church for providing free parking in the city and a free lunch for all students and staff.

What a busy few weeks it has been at Little Joey’s ELC.

The preschool children have commenced their Fundamental Movement Skills Program and have been practicing jumping using football and hoops on the oval and incorporating the use of positional words to support the growth of mathematical concepts.

We have also been focusing on healthy eating and how eating a rainbow of different food groups allows us to grow and be healthy.  Last week everyone got to work together to make a vibrant fruit salad using special child safe knives to chop up the fruit. We also did lots of mixing and measuring making pancakes for our Shrove Tuesday celebration. The children have been so interested and engaged in our cooking program that some have been eager to explore the literacy side of cooking and have been making their own cookbook by cutting photos from magazines and then sharing their ideas on what ingredients go into the recipe.

Other exciting experiences we have been doing are drawing ourselves and other people to see if we can create a person with 6 body parts.

Learning about the difference between a river and the ocean for National Sea Week and exploring the concept of pollution and recycling for National Clean Up Australia Day.

It has been a super-hot few weeks, so water play and getting items out of ice has been a wonderful way to cool down. On the front verandah we have been exploring different coloured water and a variety of boats and last Friday we have a fabulous morning of water sliding down the hill.

We are currently asking for donations from our wider school community of:

  • Wooden train sets
  • Magnetic Tiles
  • Matchbox cars
  • Duplo
  • Lego

If your child has grown out of these items, please consider donating to us as they will be well used and much loved by the children of Little Joey’s ELC
