St. Josephs Catholic College Katherine - eNewsletter Term 04 - Week 10
Principal's Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As the year draws to a close, I reflect on the many moments that have brought our community together in faith, learning, and celebration. Among the most cherished traditions of the Advent and Christmas seasons is the singing of carols. Whether it’s “Carols by Candlelight,” “Carols in the Park,” or “Carols in the Classrooms,” these melodies of joy remind us of the true spirit of Christmas.
Interestingly, not all carols were born of happy times. The Twelve Days of Christmas is one such example. During the reign of Henry VIII, when Catholics were forbidden from openly practicing their faith, this carol became a coded catechism for children. Each symbol in the song represented an element of the Catholic faith: “true love” as God, the “partridge in a pear tree” as Jesus, and the “two turtle doves” as the Old and New Testaments, to name a few.
The Christmas tree, too, is a beloved symbol with a profound history, combining medieval religious traditions such as the Paradise Tree and the Christmas Candle. These customs remind us of the light and hope brought into the world through the birth of Christ.
Another significant tradition is the nativity scene, a beautiful reminder of Jesus' humble birth. St. Francis of Assisi began this custom in 1223 to help Christians reflect on the simplicity and love of that sacred night in Bethlehem.
As we embrace these symbols and traditions, may we focus on the true essence of Christmas – the birth of Jesus, our Saviour. Amid the busyness of the season, let us find peace and joy in the message proclaimed by the angels:
"I bring to you good news of great joy, for to you is born this day a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord." (Luke 2:10-11).
I also wish to extend my sincere thanks and best wishes to all departing staff, students, and families. Your contributions to our community have been invaluable, and you will be greatly missed. May your journeys ahead be filled with success and happiness.
To our entire St Joseph’s family, I wish you a Merry Christmas filled with love, peace, and joy. I look forward to welcoming you back in 2025 as we continue to grow together in faith and learning.
Peace and Best Wishes,
Sunniva Antonucci
